About to build a computer, am I missing anything?
I'm about to put together a gaming computer, I am about to buy all the components, but am not sure if I missed anything.
-AMD Phenom II x2 processor
-MSI 785GTM-E45 motherboard
-EVGA nVidia GeForce GTX 460 768MB PCI-E Fermi
-Western Digital Caviar SE hard drive, 7200 rpm, 320gb
-Ultra Products Lifetime Series 500w PSU
-Hitachi-LG GCC-H10N CD-RW/16x DVD-ROM SATA Drive
-4gb ram buying locally
Am I missing anything? This is my first time putting together a computer.
OK if you are working on a tight budget but even on a tight budget you could do better on the hard drive. Hard drives are getting VERY inexpensive. I am running nearly 3 TB and I am not a gamer. Video card is a bit light on memory, this is one item a gamer wants to go all out on. I like the power supply. Ram look adequate but it is hard to have too much ram.
You will need a case, keyboard, mouse, game controller, operating system and of course a monitor.
The monitor is another place where a gamer needs to spend some money. I have a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW. I bought it a couple of years ago and I had to take my money to the store in a wheelbarrow. It was a bit pricey but I have never regretted it. If memory serves it is a 2 millisecond refresh and I could still play anything I might want on it.
One thing to keep in mind; software drives the hardware business; not the other way round. The best, most powerful, wildest, craziest and most expensive game machine will be obsolete in a month or less. You should decide whether you will be satisfied with the less expensive hardware of a few months ago or if you are going to try to stay current. Either way works but they don't mix well. When you try to mix the philosophies you will always be dealing with some choke point in your system.
Now the real reason I answered your question. Why are you going to build this from scratch? I have built about 50 to 60 units for customers. Even buying wholesale I can't put together a system from scratch that would equal an off the shelf unit at anywhere near the same price. Suffice to say, I don't build them anymore. Honestly I can hardly make any money at all without feeling that I have overcharged someone. Buying off the shelf saves my customers' money and me headaches.
There is some sanity to building your own. The real upside of building your own is two fold,; you know what's in the box and how it's assembled, and you will have more documentation for your system than any I might get off the shelf.
Good Luck on the project.
